Fall 2008 Movies

The fall movie season is my favorite of the year.  Its when good films premier and they aren’t as concerned about being a summer or thanksgiving / Christmas blockbuster.  Last fall I remember seeing “American Gangster”, “Michael Clayton”, “Dan in Real Life” and “Gone Baby, Gone” all within a few weeks of each other and being blown away at the quality of each film.  This fall there is another lineup of great, and creative movies.  Ghost Town stars “The Office” creator Ricky Gervais and looks to be a funny and original comedy.  “Battle in Seattle” is intriguing to me because of the local flavor in this movie… I remember watching and listening to the news during this event in 1999.  A Thousand Years of Good Prayers is going into limited release this month, hopefully it will go into wider distribution soon.  Flash of Genius and Changeling are the two films on this list that I’m anticipating the most…. although I’m a bit apprehensive with Genius, hopefully the movie can live up to the trailer and won’t disappoint.  James Bond, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will close out the fall movie season and will lead into the holidays.

Take a look at the trailers, form your own opinions, and enjoy!

Iditarod Mini-Series to air on Discovery

I already included this in a “links of our lives” post a while back, but the dates have just been announced for the upcoming Discovery Channel series on the 2008 Iditarod, along with a trailer for the show…. its looking good!  This is the same production company that has done “The Deadliest Catch” along with other Discovery favorites.  In a few weeks I’ll ramp up the iditablog in preparation for the series premier!

Check out the :60 second promo below:

TOUGHEST RACE ON EARTH: IDITAROD

World Premiere Series Begins Tuesday, October 14 at 10PM ET/PT

Discovery Channel continues its exploration into and chronicling of the fascinating world around us with the groundbreaking six-part series TOUGHEST RACE ON EARTH: IDITAROD.  Defining adventure programming, the world premiere series provides a rare look into one of the harshest races in one of the most beautiful and challenging places on the planet – The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.  Across frozen rivers, barren tundra, mountains and thick forest in freezing temperatures, this grueling 1,150 mile race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska puts mushers and their dog teams through the ultimate test of human and animal teamwork and endurance.  Filmed in March 2008, this series tells stories through the eyes of the men and women who dared to take on the ultimate test of human and animal teamwork and endurance.  The intense preparation and training of race veterans and rookies alike show what it takes to compete not only against each other, but also Mother Nature.

a little R&R

With multiple part-time jobs, a part-time internship, and a the last semister of grad school, a vacation was warrented on Lydias schedule alone.. not to mention the end of a crazy (but great!) summer for me, and the upcoming fall retreat season!  We are spending this week in Mexico, and despite an offshore tropical storm, and a few thundershowers that usally last an hour or so…its been a blast so far, and we are only on day two!  We have friends joining us this afternoon as we finish out the rest of the week…  I will try and post a few more pictures along the way, and of course will post a batch when we are back home!  Until then, take a look at the photos and video in the flickr gallery….

Links of our Lives: First week of September

The air is crisp, leaves are starting to turn colors, and school is starting for many little kiddies out there (plus Lydia). Even in the fall, the internet is an amazing place of wonder, excitement, and discovery…. The last few weeks have provided some really good netertainment (new word I just invented) that I thought I would share with you:

Bill Gates & Jerry Seinfeld Team up for Microsoft Commercials

After just airing for the first time the other day, the buzz has been big for these two. This new comedy-duo hams it up in the name of capitalism and tries to sell some computers for a new startup called Microsoft. Apparently they’ve got some piece of software that will change our lives….either that or they have a spinoff of “The Office” coming up…one of the two.

Mom Takes Awkward Picture With Obamas and Bidens at Local Diner

(seen above) The Obamas and Bidens were just enjoying a quiet meal at Yankee Kitchen Family Restaurant during a campaign stop in Boardman, Ohio… If you’re trying to take a picture of yourself with a celebrity or even the future leader of the country, I’m sure all you have to do is ask. Do you think she really said “OOPS, I dropped my fork?!?!”

gdgt.com previews new website

I’ve been a reader of Engadget, the personal technology and gadget blog for quite a while now, and when I heard that co-founder and editor-in-chief Ryan Block was leaving in order to start a new venture, I was excited to find out what was up his sleeve. The site hasn’t gone live yet, but they did post a preview podcast this week that wet our geek-riden appetite.
